Nita works hard to support her family. Her father is an educated man, paralysed by an accident; her mother is more protective and keeps an assertive eye on the children; Shankar, one of the brothers does nothing but sing all day long while the others work…

The Cloud-Capped Star is the masterpiece of Ritwik Ghatak’s already wonderful filmography. It is also the first film in his Partition of India trilogy (with E-Flat and The Golden Line). Each shot is enriched by the depth of field, while the sound design, with its often dreamlike effects, oscillates between the characters’ subjectivity and real situations.
