Assam in the 1930’s : Menoka is the wife of a prominent man in a little village and the mother of four children. The husband falls in love with a young man whom he takes on as a seconde wife. Menoka feels abandonned and, in return, she rejects her husband’s sexual advances. She becomes the mistress of Madan, the overseer, and becomes pregnant.
