Marat is a chauffeur in Almaty, a sprawling city in Kazakhstan. When he runs into the Mercedes of a local nouveau riche, Marat’s life spirals into a frightening nightmare. The cost of repairs is beyond Marat’s means, leaving him with one solution : he must borrow the money from a Mafia gang-leader, paying usurious interest on the loan. Harassed by his creditor, Marat ends up accepting a “contract” : the cancelling of his debt in return for the killing of a journalist. Thus he becomes a “hired killer”.
