In 1922, following floods in the north of the Hebei province, a mother has to flee with her family. With the help of Lao Deng and Wang Laode, she finds shelter and work in a small town by the railway tracks. Later, her husband dies and Lao Deng keeps helping her. Under his influence, she becomes are of social injustice and gradually gets involved in the revolutionary struggle.
