La Ciénaga
(La Ciénaga)

by Lucrecia MARTEL

The summer is stormy for the Mecha and Tali families, two cousins who live in north-western Argentina. The first lives at La Mandragora, a vast decadent property at the foot of the mountains; the other in a small house in the middle of the town La Ciénaga. In both cases, a dramatic turn of events will expedite the family’s disintegration. Lucrecia Martel’s first feature film is a veritable detonation in the history of Argentine cinema, not only in terms of geographical disorientation (she films in the Salta region where she grew up), but also regarding a renewal of form that masterfully plays on the circulation of points of view. A film with a rare density of images and sound, La ciénaga (literally, “swamp”) conveys an experience of the gravity of bodies caught between irrepressible desires and the imminence of death. CA
