Manuel, Rodrigo Vengas’ son, comes home after fighting for his country’s independence. Ruined, he has no choice but to borrow money from Elias. Elias’s house is burnt down and Rodrigo dies in the arms of Father Trinidad as he is leaving the house in flames. Elias takes over Rodrigo’s house, leaving Manuel with nothing. The boy falls in love with Soledad, Elias’s daughter. A hostile Elias forces Manuel to stay away and Soledad ends up marrying Antonio Arregui.
