Né dans une famille aisée de Calcutta, son père Sukumar Ray est un écrivain et poète important de la littérature bengali ; Satyajit Ray a donc reçu une bonne éducation. Il a aussi passé beaucoup d’années comme illustrateur dans une maison d’édition. Inspiré par le roman de Pather Panchali, il décida d’en faire un film et le tourna en décors réels, utilisant des amis comme acteurs, le finançant tout seul. A court de fonds, le gouvernement du Bengale lui prêta la somme manquante, lui permettant ainsi de finir le film. Ce fut un succès, tant artistiquement que commercialement, et Ray reçoit un prix en 1956 au Festival de Cannes, faisant découvrir au monde l’industrie cinématographique indienne. Il a remporté un Oscar pour l’ensemble de son oeuvre en 1992. Il a été décoré également de la Bharat Ratna, la plus haute distinction de l’Inde en 1992.
