A former French chef, also a former contract killer, wants to avenge his daughter’s murder by hitmen in Macao. In turn, this brings him to hire a team of killers… But the man suffers from memory loss and must record the clues to his quest in order to see it through. This whole game of displacing is also that of celebrity Johnny Halliday, who is thrown into Johnnie To’s universe as a foreign body that softly derails the Hongkongese’s impeccable stylisation. The fantasies in the script carried out by its characters, sketch out an ever more dishevelled, manneristic and crepuscular film, where re-readings of his own cinema and borrowing from French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville intertwine.
