Suzu has three elder half-sisters who are not yet aware that she exists. It is at the funeral of their father, who had abandoned them fifteen years earlier, that Sachi, Yoshino and Chika discover this pretty 14-year-old gift left by their father. Rather than taking offence, they welcome Suzu. In no way will they let life’s vicissitudes spoil their talent for happiness. Similarly, the inexperienced actresses (like the children in Nobody Knows) who make up this sisterhood become memorable by catching up the stolen years of their childhood. Maybe Kore-eda’s most solar film? JB
