Rithy Panh is 11 years old when the Khmer Rouge seize power in Cambodia. While the story of the genocide is central to the filmmaker’s œuvre, The Missing Picture touches on what is most intimate for him. Through his personal story, he revisits the famine, the work camps and the regime’s harshness, and expresses a cruelty that only his imagination can put into images. Calling on clay figurines resembling his deceased parents and friends, he mixes in archive propaganda films and brings his personal memories back to life, while the voice-over words of author Christophe Bataille echo the suffering of a whole people.
