Eighteen Springs is another adaptation of one of Eileen Chang’s very popular novels, a project Ann Hui nurtured even before she made Love in a Fallen City. This reconstitution of 1930s Shanghai is held up by an exceptional cast, presided over by Anita Mui. An admirable portrait of two sisters who are in conflict but consumed by their times, one by class prejudice, the other by the sacrifice she makes for her family, by which she inadvertently betrays her younger sister. Ann Hui delivers a melodrama of the purest Hongkongese tradition. JB
