In Hong Kong, a sparrow is a pickpocket and Kei is the most skilful of them all. Between two wallet thefts with his gang, he enjoys riding round the city on his bike taking photos. One day a stunning woman appears in his viewfinder; he is bewitched, as are all of his gang members. But she did not meet them by chance: she wants the pickpockets to steal something very precious for her… Moving away jubilantly from the silos of film genres, Johnnie To’s cinema cultivates an elegant impurity. From comedy to thriller, he plays on the porosity of registers by having tonalities and codes dance together in an unexpected fashion. MFM
