143 SAHARA STREET by Hassen FERHANI
Documentary · Algeria · 1h40 · 2019
Here, instead of a roundabout, there’s a shanty by way of a crossroads, the one where Malika, a lone woman of advanced years, serves omelettes, tins of tuna, bread, coffee and tea to travellers and backpackers who pass by, to the lorry drivers who more regularly stop off. From the end of her little table, Malika opens up her home, like a pebble to the whims of the wind, to the rumours of a distant world that conversations amplify. The portrait reveals another intersection between reality and its metaphor: that of a country on the edge of the road. Jérôme Baron
