Starring mainland Chinese action movie A-listers Jet Li and Wu Jing and directed by Hong Kong’s premier martial arts auteur Yuen Woo-ping, Blades of the Guardians is as much a gravity-defying spectacle as its title suggests. Revolving around a jaded bounty hunter’s moral reawakening as he protects a tribal clan and a revolutionary from brutal imperial mercenaries in the western fringes of 6th century China, the film combines the aesthetics of the Western – deserts, horses and inns – with the emphasis on valour and justice that has long defined wuxia. With its sprawling structure and a vast constellation of characters and storylines, the film is proof that the 81-year-old Yuen’s ambitions remain as undimmed as his sword-wielding protagonists.
