« Being brave is not being fearless – it’s about carrying on fighting in the face of a mighty power », says Guy Marius Sagna, the Senegalese activist (and parliamentarian-to-be) in Indépendence Tey. Courage indeed drives Abdou Lahat Fall’s dynamic and daring documentary, as it chronicles across four years the grassroots political organisation that eventually led to the end of Macky Sall’s authoritarian rule in Senegal in 2024. Resistance lies with the people: the furious villagers geared up to challenge corrupted mining corporations, activists making lists of their detained comrades after a demonstration, teachers heightening their students’ awareness. Some would leave; others persist. A revolution with its forte and flaws seen up close.Clarence Tsui
