The Burning Giants
(Yak mai)

by Phuttiphong AROONPHENG

OK202610_THE_BURNING_GIANTS_AROONPHENG_Diversion_4

Lyrical about the present, mournful about the past and fearful of what the future might bring to marginalised groups in an age of persecution and tyranny, The Burning Giants is an enigmatic yet relentlessly fiery tale about the forced physical (and psychological) dislocation of ethnic minorities in Southeast Asia – something that has become just too painfully commonplace (and ignored) today. Following the cue of Manta Ray (2018), Phuttiphong Aroonpheng again tackles the issue of borderland identity as a suspenseful thriller and then humanist drama. In the forest, a man suffering from an infectious disease that brings about blotched and blistered skin, is caught by soldiers who then torches his home. In town, two Karen women live and work with the offspring of their ancestors’ oppressors, their memories of their roots and anguish slipping away. A film about the pain of the “little people” that burns bright. Clarence Tsui
