Based on a short story by G. B. Senanayake, The Treasure is widely regarded as one of the greatest Sri Lankan films ever made. The film tells the story of Willie Abeynayake, the last heir of a once-glorious aristocratic family. After squandering his fortune and falling into debt, Willie identifies a woman: a virgin marked by four birthmarks, whom he believes holds the key to fulfilling a prophecy that could save him from ruin. He marries her with the intention of killing her to obtain a hidden treasure, but events take an unexpected turn when he begins to fall in love with her. It is a tale of one man’s obsession, a woman’s blind devotion, and a cinematic meditation on the eternal question: which holds more power — fate or free will? Jayashika Padmasiri
