Loan and Trung have been friends since their early childhood, although as they have grown up, feelings of love model their complicit relationship. But times change and the young woman is attracted to the easier life that a marriage of convenience with an older, richer man offers her. Bach Diep, alongside Viet Linh, is one of Vietnamese cinema’s feminine voices from this era. In In the Lane, like in most of her other films, she more specifically endeavours to depict her female character’s emotional dilemmas from a particular historical and social perspective. JB
