With Yaaba (“grandmother” in Mooré), Idrissa Ouedraogo depicts the power dynamics that dictate social life in a rural Burkinabé village. Told through the eyes of Bila, a quiet and observant child, the film explores the relationships between women and men, the individual and the community, social norms and their margins. Yaaba is the story of an emancipation — that of a child driven by a deep longing for understanding and justice, who continually questions his relationship to the world and to social order. Through subtle and stripped-down direction, Ouedraogo delivers a masterful and humanist work, elevated by Francis Bebey’s music, known for his unique blend of traditional African instruments and synthesizers.
