In a village in 17th-century south-west China, widow Tung lives with her daughter and mother-in-law. Captain Yang-Kwan arrives with his cavalry unit to protect the village and chooses to take up lodgings in her home. Hidden feelings begin to stir between Madam Tung and the cavalry officer. A magnificent feature by Hong Kong’s first female director, T’ang Shushuen, The Arch is shot by cinematographer Subrata Mitra, who is also known for his photography on Satyajit Ray’s Charulata and The World of Apu.
