Within the context of a discreet Pakistani film industry, Saim Sadiq’s first feature stands out as a rare and precious work. Expanding on his short film Darling (2019) — which first introduced trans actress Alina Khan — Joyland explores the damage wrought by the injunction to virility, upheld by a patriarchal system that oppresses both women and men in Pakistani society. Taking the form of a family and social chronicle, the film intertwines the thwarted destinies of its characters, who, under the weight of others’ gazes, nevertheless strive to carve out their own paths — to affirm their identities and give voice to their desires.
