Maryam Goormaghtigh’s debut feature, Before Summer Ends, was born from a chance encounter between the filmmaker and three Iranian friends living in exile in Paris. Along a road trip to the south of France, Goormaghtigh captures, in a single gesture, both the preciousness of their bond and the weight of the uprooting that unites them. With her light cinematic touch, she gains access to the trio’s intimacy — their long day-and-night conversations, their joyful physical closeness, and their deep affection. As the journey unfolds, far from conventional portrayals of masculinity, a tender, poetic, and subtly melancholic male friendship comes to light. Léa Leboucq
