D. B. Nihalsinghe’s groundbreaking film Welikathara masterfully blurs the boundaries between good and evil, right and wrong. These moral absolutes dissolve into shades of grey as two men clash, each fighting for what he personally believes is ‘right’. The story follows Randeniya, the newly appointed ASP of Police, a man of integrity, as he arrives at a godforsaken, dusty coastal outpost where the law feels as brittle as the earth. His resolve is soon tested when he encounters Goring Mudalali, a local thug tied to a dark chapter from Randeniya’s own past. As Randeniya delves deeper into Mudalali’s criminal underworld, his pursuit of justice begins to verge on obsession. Welikathara redefined cinematic storytelling in Sri Lanka and became the country’s first film to be shot in CinemaScope. Jayashika Padmasiri
