12 October 2009, Javier Chocobar, a member of the Chuschagasta indigenous community, is killed by a landowner and two ex-police officers who had come to unlawfully evict him from his lands in Tucumán Province. Alternating moments from the trial, archive footage and everyday scenes, Lucrecia Martel’s debut documentary Nuestra Tierra, filmed and edited over a long timespan, avoids an accusatory tone that concentrates on an isolated incident. Instead, the film highlights the continuity of an age-old rationale of expropriation that is still ongoing. A rigorous and surprising work, to counter all forms of oblivion.
