A Muslim street photographer in Mumbai (the umpteenth demonstration of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s magical charisma) is obliged by his matriarchal grandmother to find himself a wife. Caught in a trap, he decides to invent his own love story, using photos he has taken of a young unknown woman. Can he convince himself to fall in love with these images? What truth do they reveal? Photograph delicately posits a love story between characters of different faiths and social classes. With tiny brush strokes, all forming mysteries that flesh out the story, the film authors a contemporary version of the romantic comedy with a feigned naivety. The latest from Ritesh Batra, a director already known to Festival des 3 Continents, where he sat on the 2014 jury after presenting The Lunchbox. Aisha Rahim
