Teh-en, a dashing, distinguished young man from the city, falls in love with the lovely peasant girl, Miss Lim. His mother, however, refuses that her son live with a woman below his social rank. Bu Wancang creates a precise and dynamic mise en scène blending realism and a real sense of photography. The film was one of the first big nationwide successes, and brought to the screen a new Chinese actress, Ruan Lingyu, who went on to become an outstanding star of the epoch. Maxime Martinot
