Al-Tahaleb depicts the varions aspects of life in the Syrian city of Hama. Abou Assad leads a hard life. An employee at the local court, he is constantly harassed by mimerons plaintiffs while at home his two brothers keep tearing each other to pieces over an inheri- tance. However he can still enjoy a few peaceful moments by the Oronte River where the regular, monotonous moaning of the noria chants time. But Abou Assad dreams of going far away from this world…
