In a southern town, Yuwen, a young woman, has been married for eight years to Liyan, a depressive man with poor health. She does not really love him but remains attached to him. The household is also made up of Liyan’s exuberant and energetic younger sister, as well as the old servant. One day, Zhishen, a young doctor and old school friend of Liyan’s, comes to visit. He used to be madly in love with Yuwen. Love is soon rekindled between Yuwen and Zhishen.
