Mingmongkol Sonakul was born in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1971. After her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute, she collaborated with the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. She returned to Thailand and rapidly established herself as an essential figure in the Thai independent cinema production community.

Mingmongkol Sonakul is currently in pre-production for her next film, A Summer Movie.

Firecracker Film is an independent film production company created by Mingmongkol Sonakul.

The goal of this organization is to develop methods of support outside of the established mechanisms. The areas addressed range from alternative financial strategies, to the production process and independent distribution. Each project is considered as a unique case and receives an individualized solution. Firecracker’s methods have given life to numerous award winning films, and launched the careers of many promising directors.

The film Mysterious object at noon, by Apichatpong Weerasethakul was completed in 1998 on a very modest budget. This is the first Thai film to be granted funds by the Hubert Bals foundation at the Rotterdam Festival.

In the short film production category, Firecracker has produced movies by Aditya Assarat: Motorcycle and Waiting, screened in over 50 international film festivals. These films were eventually bought by the Japanese Cinefil Imagica Channel, the Sundance Channel in the United States and Film Four in Great Britain.

Recently, Firecracker and GMM Pictures (The Grammy Group) teamed up for the co-production of One night husband, by Pimpaka Towira.

Blissfully yours was a French co-production (Charles de Meaux, Kick the Machine), and was selected for Un Certain Regard at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. The movie was distributed in France by Why Not.
