An Arabian Nights Hip Hop Fairy Tale Epic

Synopsis: Socially retarded wedding videomaker Noor hears from his beloved grandmother Umi that he is the child of another. He flees his evil stepmother-boss Fats, stumbling into the lair of demon djinn Khamseen. The otherworldly pornographer lures Noor into a creative collaboration. On set Noor falls for the terrified young starlet Laeeqa. He rescues her but discovers she is a djinn. And they might be twins! Hiding out with the punky-gorgeous revolutionary Hasheesheens, Noor and Laeeqa battle to resist their deepening love. When Laeeqa is blinded by vengeful Khamseen, they must journey through the djinn world to Heaven to save her life. There the story of their birth is finally revealed.

The Meeran brothers are re-writibg the script of The djinn. They've received the suppot of Hivos Fonds, Hubert Bals Fonds, Goteborg Fonds and Sithengi Fonds.

Carey McKenzie got her start in theatre at Cambridge and went on to NYU’s Graduate Film Program in New York.


Her feature documentary Original Child Bomb premiered at Tribeca 2004, tied for the grand jury prize at Silverdocs and won the Bologna Human Rights Nights. It aired on the Sundance Channel and screened at Moma.


An associated short Bis for Bom won the Cannes Short Film Corner’s competition run by National Film Board of Canada.

Since returning to South Africa Carey has set up Hothouse Films with New York based partner Sharon Lomofsky.

She's now writing a new script: Black south easter. The project is produced by Hothouse Films and Tendeka Matatu (Muti Films/ South Africa), Tuen Hilte (Clockwork Films/ UK) and Sharon Lomofsky (Hothouse Films/ USA). Le NFVF (South African National Film and Television Foundation) is supporting the production. The movie should be shot at the end of 2007.

Synopsis: Sizwe, a township gangster turned cop, battles the rising tide of narcotics in Cape Town.   When a Chinese femme fatale draws him into a smugglers' turf war, he must defy his corrupt police boss to save his own life.

Twins Jean and Zinaid Meeran were born in a white hospital in 1970s Pietermaritzburg, there being none for mothers classified ‘coloured’.


Jean obtained an MA in Film from UCT and NYU and attended the Binger in Amsterdam.


Zinaid has an MFA in Film and an MA in Critical Studies from UCLA.
Through their production company, Team Tarbaby, they represent for Tarbabies worldwide.

Now living in Cape Town, they make art and films. They have received awards from Hivos, Hubert Bals, Goteborg Film Fund and Sithengi.
