What are the aims ?

European producers can often find aid and administrative support.

Their colleagues in the south often lack these resources. The Festival of the 3 Continents created the Producing in the South workshop in order to help reduce the disparities.

Producing in the South is a workshop-seminar introducing techniques to aid in the production of films in the south.
The workshops aim to familiarize producers based in the south with a variety of important tools:

Legal: copyright and author’s right, contracts, mandates ;

Policies: international audiovisual stakes, national film industries protection systems ;

Financing: international funding (foundations, distributors, grants, pre-sales…) ;

Marketing: presenting the script and the project, the pitch ;

Technical: quotes, production and post-production, new technologies, arbitration and specific coproduction issues ;

Commercial: export, distribution, markets, festivals ;

Scriptwriting: analysis and appreciation by scriptwriters and producers used to coproductions.

How does it work ?

During 7 days in Nantes and Paris, Producing in the South proposes:

- a production workshop : a 3 days master class with European professionals ;
- a presentation of the producers and their projects ;
- a scriptwriting workshop : 2 days of individual consulting with scriptwriting and producers.

The workshops are run by international professionals : producers, legal experts, distributors, sales managers, TV channels, European scriptwriters.

The producer attends the whole of the training workshop. The director takes part in the consulting sessions in relation to the project.

In Paris : a visit to the CNC (French national film centre), Titra Film, Kodak (including a study of various film formats), Cinéfondation.

All along the year, the producers can rely on a trustable network :

- participating in the Cannes Producer’s Network or in other festivals ;
- getting individual consulting with script doctors ;
- involving in regular sessions with film professionals from around the world to present their projects.

Does it work ?

Yes, indeed !

Producing in the South is now recognised as a must for young southern producers wishing to know all the stakes in international co-production and market.

The success of the seminar is demonstrated in the number of applications each year (about a hundred).

F3C has created a quality label and established a group of selected professionals whose common ground is their love for the cinema, commitment to a high standard in film production, and an enthusiasm for creating new synergies in the field.

Producing in the South is often synonymous with “coproducing with a Northern country”. Coproducing implies adapting to other cultures and other methods. Coproducing implies inventing a common language.

In these ways, Produire au Sud has put in place a unique support service for producers from the south.
